Passion Fruit

Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) is described by its Tupi name as “gourd-shaped food.” Brazil and Colombia are the most traditional countries in cultivation, with diversity of commercial and wild species.

In Brazil, the yellow or sour passion fruit represents 90% of the total cultivated area. The plants grow well in tropical and subtropical regions, being found in different biomes of Brazil mainly in the Cerrado, Amazon, Atlantic Forest, and Caatinga.

Properties

Passion fruit is rich in saturated fatty acids, phosphorus, minerals, and vitamins A and C. Its seed oil contains a good amount of fatty acids and is suitable for use in cooking and cosmetics.

Versatility

Passion fruit pulp is widely used in the preparation of juices, ice cream, and desserts. Its emollient and antioxidant properties make it suitable for use in cosmetic and dermatological products, such as ointments for scar treatment and psoriasis, as well as anti-aging creams.
