Cumaru

Cumaru (Dipteryx odorata) is native to the northern regions of the Amazon and is found in almost all dryland forests of Pará, Venezuela, and Guyana. The large, thick-trunked tree provides hard, heavy timber used in shipbuilding.

The cumaru fruit, when ripe, releases a seed with an oily texture. This seed is also known as tonka and has a strong, vanilla-like aroma. The substance responsible for this characteristic smell is coumarin.

Properties

The cumaru seed has several benefits, especially medicinal. It has anti-inflammatory and analgesic functions, making it an excellent bronchodilator and antiasthmatic.

Versatility

Cumaru has been used throughout the world as an excellent aroma fixative in cosmetics and perfumery. In cooking, its aroma perfumes dishes, drinks, and desserts. It is also used in the manufacture of tobacco.
