Buriti

Buriti (Mauritia flexuosa) is one of the largest palm trees in the Amazon, with a diameter of 30-50 centimeters and a height of 20-35 meters. Its nutritious fruit is important for the people and animals of the region.

The palm germinates in igapós (flooded areas) on the banks of streams and rivers, where it is seen in large concentrations. The water helps to disperse the seeds, forming extensive populations of buritizais.

Properties

Buriti is rich in beta-carotene, carotenoids, and pro-vitamin A. It also has antioxidant action and increases UV protection. In addition, it can provide a good amount of protein in the human diet. The pulp contains 11% protein, almost equal to corn.

Versatility

Oil extracted from the buriti fruit is used in cosmetic products suitable for skin, hair, and after-sun products. Buriti pulp is used in the production of sweets and drinks.
